Moving Checklist

We know that moving is one of the most thrilling and chaotic times of your life. Moving to a new location can be very stressful, but with proper planning, can also be fun and exciting. As you know, a myriad of responsibilities accompany the moving process, and overlooking even the simplest of those may cause unexpected setbacks for you. We want your entire home buying experience to be as enjoyable as possible - to help achieve that, we have compiled the following moving tips and checklist to help facilitate your move. We hope they will be helpful for you and your family.

Four to Five Weeks Prior to Move
Now is the perfect time to downsize, purge and donate. Don't move things you no longer want or need.
Create a "Moving Folder" to keep such things as this checklist, receipts, names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of key people you are working with, etc.
Inventory your possessions for insurance purposes. Photograph valuables and record serial numbers. Become familiar with your new community. Some things you may want to inquire about are:

  • Local Utility Companies
  • Internet and cable providers
  • Location of town offices
  • Bank locations
  • Obtain a change of address kit from the post office
  • Confirm a moving date with the builder
Choose a moving company and be clear regarding your expectations and contract. Set a moving date with your movers. Obtain packing supplies and start packing non-essentials and seldom used items. Label each box clearly and identify room placement location.
Notify your insurance agents regarding policy transfers. Verify that your insurance policy covers moving; if not, obtain coverage.

Two to Three Weeks Prior to Moving
Pack a few boxes each day and pack room by room, clearly labeling general content description and room placement location.
Schedule your walk-through
Schedule your closing date and attorney meetings
Determine what you'll be taking with you on moving day - such as important or irreplaceable items, toys/games for kids, snacks and a first aid kit.
Confirm delivery dates with movers.
If necessary, schedule to have your car serviced for the trip.
Make sure all of your dry cleaning has been picked up, return any books that belong to the library and collect or return any items on loan.
Contact your new city's Department of Motor Vehicles to determine driver's license requirements, and transfer plates and/or registration on your vehicles.
Select a bank in your new city - transfer existing and/or set up new accounts, and obtain a safety deposit box if needed.

One Week Prior to Move
Organize a moving day kit to include:

  • moving folder
  • mover’s contract
  • telephone/cell phone
  • tools
  • protective cloth for floors
  • snacks and drinks for the day of the move
Re-confirm moving date and time with builder and movers
Confirm the time for your final walk through.
Contact title company and closing attorney a day or two prior to moving. At this time you will be able to determine the exact amount for the cashier’s check you will need to close your loan.
You are now prepared to move and finally enjoy your new home.

You're Home!
